I'm obsessed with Athletic Pilates. Here's why.

August 03, 2021 2 min read 2 Comments

After 3 major injuries in 12 months, I decided that it was time for me to ditch high intensity functional classes and lifting heavy weights and find a more "age appropriate" form of exercise.  Don't get me wrong, I love seeing people in their 50s and 60s+ smashing out an F45 session like it's nobody's business, however I have come to realise that listening to my body is what works for me.

I've always loved Pilates Reformer, so I joined EMF Platinum and decided to try one of Loren Robinson's Athletic Pilates classes.

O.M.G.

Loren describes her class as "taking the fundamental foundations of traditional pilates and flipping it upside down".  The key elements focus on working the upper back, core and glutes; all in the name of creating a strong body. However it's the high intensity of the workout that differentiates it from most pilates classes. These workouts aim to work your full body and get your heart rate sky high!

Hump day class is affectionately known as Whiteboard Wednesday. Loren writes the exercises on a whiteboard and we either do a certain number of each, or as many as we can in a time block.

Here's an example of what we did in a recent class - twice through!  Maybe give it a try for yourself...
  • 50 scooters per side
  • 100 box-overs
  • 30 push ups
  • 30 reverse crunch / leg lower
  • 50 scooters per side
  • 30 pike ankle touch
  • 30 squat jump to box jump
  • 30 single arm chest press per side
  • 50 flying kick per side
  • 30 standing split per side
  • 30 laying lat pulldowns
  • 50 booty kicks per leg
I enjoy this class because it's an opportunity to really push myself whilst still maintain good form...and I'm happy to report it's much less harsh on my joints, keeping injuries at a minimum.
You can follow Loren on instagram @loren_robinson where she's currently posting a series of "Booty Got Back" band workouts to keep us engaged in working out during lockdown.

I love that you switched up your work outs. And Pilates was such a wise choice. Such a great work out!
