Like most health issues, most of us take breathing for granted until we have an issue with it.  Oxygen is indispensable; we need it for everything. Unfortunately, most of us suffer from lack of oxygen. Air pollution, lack of exercise, poor diets, improper breathing and ageing all deprive our cells of this vital element and therefore weakens our immune system.

So how important is it in managing the day-to-day functioning of your body?

Some of the key roles oxygen performs in your body are as follows:

ENERGY.  Oxygen powers your energy cycle and is essential for the conversion of nutrients from everything you consume into energy your body can use.

MOBILITY.  During heavy physical exertion and sport, your body uses up to 15 times more oxygen than sitting still.  So, as you get older if you want to be active, you may find yourself more and more restricted in what you can do as your body gets less and less oxygen-efficient.

SKIN HEALTH.  Oxygen is essential in the production of collagen and elastin, the proteins that are primarily responsible for giving your skin elasticity, tone and firmness.

PROTECTION.  Most microbial organisms like bacteria and viruses can’t thrive in a well-oxygenated body, however good (aerobic) organisms flourish when they receive plenty of oxygen.

TOXIN REMOVAL. Oxygen plays a key role in the cleansing and removal of toxins.  These include the pollution from the air you breathe, the preservatives and chemicals from food you eat, the contaminants from cigarette smoke, the alcohol from beer, wine & spirits, and the hormones created during stress.

PREVENTS HANGOVERS. Oxygen is essential for the break down and removal of alcohol, which is why supplementing with SuperCells reduces the likelihood of a hangover or helps get over one quicker.  Read our ultimate hangover hack here.

HELPS BREAKDOWN FAT.  Oxygen is important in the process of breaking down stored fat into energy.  Breaking down fat is hard work – it takes around twice as much oxygen to break down 1g of fat as it does to break down 1g of carbs or protein.

BRAIN POWER. Your brain uses around 25% of the oxygen you take in, even though it is only about 2% of body mass.  Proper oxygenation is vital for concentration, memory, thought processes, judgment, balance, co-ordination and overcoming fatigue.

SLEEP. Plentiful oxygen is vital for achieving deep, high quality sleep.

When you overload your body and it can’t send enough oxygen to the right places you just don’t feel right.  If your body is using lots of oxygen to fight off nasty bugs, break down alcohol, or repair aching muscles, you don’t have much energy. When your body is using its oxygen to cope with life’s stresses, other important areas must be missing out which may cause circulation and other issues.  Every one of the trillions of cells in your body must continually receive adequate oxygen if it’s to function and regenerate properly.

WHAT STRESS DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR LIFE?

Perhaps you stress your body from training hard, or you have work-related mental stress, stress stemming from relationship or family issues or financial stress.  There’s even toxic stress to consider from living or working in a polluted environment. All these stresses deplete your oxygen levels.

To make matters worse, your oxygen ‘earning capacity’ decreases with age.  After peaking in your twenties, your body’s natural ability to process oxygen diminishes by about one percent a year.  As you get older, your lung capacity decreases, your breathing isn’t as deep, your heart doesn’t pump as strong, your blood isn’t capable of carrying as much oxygen and your circulation is compromised.

When a cell loses 35% of its oxygen it becomes very sick and can turn cancerous.

So, how can you make yourself oxygen rich and live your best life?

  • Exercise to get your blood flowing
  • Stay hydrated by drinking lots of good quality water (structured water is the best)
  • Eat a diet high in plant foods which are naturally high in oxygen
  • Reduce alcohol consumption
  • Stop smoking cigarette and stay away from secondary smoke
  • Consider following a breathing discipline such as yoga or meditation

Unfortunately, even when we do our best to follow these guidelines, we’re always fighting a losing battle over time.  That’s why supplementing with oxygen is the best way to keep oxygen levels in check.
