What is Molecular Hydrogen?

Molecular hydrogen could be the future in terms of health regimen, overall wellness, management of pain and inflammation, and longevity. So, what actually is molecular hydrogen? Hydrogen is the smallest and most abundant element in the Universe. Everything has a relationship to hydrogen. In fact, hydrogen forms 90% of all atoms in the cosmos and our sun is made up of 72% hydrogen. The magnitude of this seems scary, however as hydrogen is a naturally forming part of each and every one of us, there is no reason to fear it.

Hydrogen (symbol H) likes to hang out in pairs, hence the H2. It’s called ‘molecular hydrogen’ because a set of two or more atoms is called a ‘molecule’. Hydrogen could actually be called the ‘miracle molecule’. Well, that’s what science is pointing to! There are more than 700 scientific studies that display hydrogen’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-ageing and anti-obesity effects, with no known side effects. Hydrogen has been shown to have marked therapeutic effect across 170 disease models and every organ in the human body!

Hydrogen is the best of all antioxidants, helping to prevent cell damage and inflammation, whilst protecting DNA. Hydrogen can be likened to fuel for your cells, helping to create more energy in the mitochondria, the energy production centre of the body.

Being so small (90 times smaller than Vitamin C molecule and even smaller than oxygen), hydrogen can pass the blood brain barrier and go straight through the cell wall, eradicating toxic free radicals and healing where it is most effective. No other antioxidant can do this and that’s why hydrogen is so amazing in achieving such outstanding results across practically every ailment and disease model.

The reason molecular hydrogen is causing such a stir in the medical industry, is that it scavenges the harmful free radicals and selectively leaves the beneficial ones to do their job. It is the only antioxidant that has the ability to do so. Furthermore, when molecular hydrogen neutralises the harmful free radicals, it simply reacts with them to form water and hydrates you in the process.

The benefits of supplementing with molecular hydrogen are numerous and can in fact be life-changing. Science has proven that molecular hydrogen has a marked therapeutic effect across many illnesses including rheumatoid arthritis, allergies, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and Alzheimer’s.

 Reduces Inflammation and Targets Arthritis

Molecular hydrogen exhibits anti-inflammatory effects in many animal studies, however in a specific human study, patients with rheumatoid arthritis were asked to drink 500ml of hydrogen water per day, for 4 weeks. By the end of the study all patients with early rheumatoid arthritis achieved remission and 20% became totally symptom-free.

 Provides Neurological Protection

Drinking hydrogen water prevented both the development and progression of neural degeneration and also suppressed neuronal loss development of Parkinson’s disease in an experiment on rats and mice. Additionally, in a study on patients with Parkinson’s disease, it was found that the intake of hydrogen water reduces neurotoxic damage, which agrees with previous studies on animals. There were also no adverse effects from consuming the hydrogen water at high doses (1 litre per day).

 Improves Athletic Performance and Recovery

Human studies on athletes show that molecular hydrogen supplementation can decrease lactic acid levels. It also improves the energy production (ATP) of the mitochondria. The studies also show decreased fatigue and muscle damage, which substantiates the benefits and power of molecular hydrogen not only for athletes, but across all sports performance. There are even studies showing that hydrogen not only increases ATP production, but might also induce ‘mitochondrial biogenesis’, which means the mitochondria produces more energy.

Ageing is a reality for all living organisms and is the result of the progressive accumulation of changes that reduce a person’s ability to resist stress, therefore decreasing the possibility of survival. It has been shown that hydrogen water increases telomerase activity (an anti-aging biomarker) up to 148% when cells are treated. Increased telomerase activity caused by hydrogen water may be able to protect telomeres from degeneration, suggesting the possible use of hydrogen water for anti-ageing purposes.

 Hydrogen May Treat Metabolic Acidosis

Metabolic acidosis is a condition characterized by an increase in blood acidity, which can be exacerbated with exercise. A study in healthy physically active males found that a daily intake of hydrogen water for 14 days increased the pH of the blood before and after exercise with no side effects. The study concluded that drinking hydrogen water is safe and may have an alkalising effect in the blood.

Positive Effects on Depression, Mood Disorders, Bipolar Disorder, and Schizophrenia

Hydrogen Water Reduces Side Effects of Cancer Treatments

Many side effects of radiotherapy are believed to be associated with increased oxidative stress and inflammation due to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during radiotherapy. In a study on patients receiving radiation therapy for malignant liver tumours, drinking 1.5-2 litres of hydrogen water per day suppressed oxidative stress, prevented loss of appetite and improved mortality. The tumours still responded to the radiotherapy. Hydrogen treatment also inhibited radiation-induced death in human white blood cells, suggesting that hydrogen may be used as effective protection against radiation induced damage. Another study found that pre-treating mice with hydrogen water before radiation exposure increased survival rates and protected their heart from radiation-induced damage.

Oxidative stress is involved in cancer development. Hydrogen is a potent antioxidant and exhibits anti-inflammatory and potentially anticancer-like activities. High-content hydrogen water can inhibit colon cancer.
